Hanging Oil Lamp

Hanging Oil Lamps. My first recollection of an oil lamp was during the early 1950's during a hurricane. I remember the excitement when the electricity went out and our only light came from two mysterious and beautiful glass kerosene lamps that were placed on the kitchen table we called our hurricane oil lamps. One hurricane oil lamp was placed on each side of the table. My brother and I stared at those lamps and wondered at how they lighted up the room in dancing shadows. I now wonder whatever happened to those two crystal clear glass kerosene lamps. Today they would no doubt be considered antique kerosene lamps and at the least would be called a vintage oil lamp. These were not hanging oil lamps but were the type that sit on a table. They were clear glass kerosene lamps with delicate clear glass chimneys. The wicks were probably cotton and were trimmed occasionally.

After some research I found that kerosene lamps were used in the rural areas of the United States well into the 1940s and are still very popular today. Some are wall oil lamps, some are lamps that sit on a table, and some are hanging oil lamps. The oil used in the old oil lamps was usually whale oil. I wouldn't want to have a whale killed to use its oil so we use kerosene or a specialized lamp oil to fuel our lamps now a days. I prefer the plain clear unscented lamp oils, But there is a scented lamp oil available in various fragrances.
